The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival X Jet Tone's 25th anniversary
Key Art by《2046》Graphic Designer WONG San Mun
Artist Louis KOO Tin-Lok as Film Festival Ambassador for the 3rd consecutive year

Jan 14, 2016

14 January 2016 (Hong Kong) – The key art of the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF40) is designed by WONG San Mun, employing a film still from 2046. The festival is pleased to have Mr. Louis KOO Tin-Lok as the festival ambassador for the third consecutive year.

Whether playing as a caring and supporting husband in Little Big Master or as a former policeman wracked by inner conflict in Wild City, Mr. KOO has proven that his excellence as one of Hong Kong’s premier leading men. He is very honoured to be HKIFF40 ambassador, to promote this major international film festival and the Hong Kong film industry.

This year is also the 25th anniversary of Wong Kar-wai’s Hong Kong-based production company Jet Tone Films Ltd. (Jet Tone). In celebrating Jet Tone’s birthday, a selection of Jet Tone signature movies will be showcased at the festival, followed by Wong Kar-wai’s master class and a special publication on Jet Tone with rare photos and interviews.

We are happy to have Mr. WONG San Mun, a talented and experienced graphic designer whose works include Jet Tone films Happy Together, Eros and 2046, as the key art designer of HKIFF40. Mr. WONG’s design combines a still from the movie 2046, with “4” and “0” as represented by a triangle and circle. The design suggests a range of interpretations – it could literally mean “40” but can also be seen as ▲ play ● record buttons on a video camera, a graphic of a film camera, or a spotlight.

“ㄨ” is “4” in Suzhou huama script – a numeric system commonly employed in the Southern Sung dynasty before the introduction of Arabic numerals. The huama numeric system was frequently used in the old days Hong Kong, and represents our unique culture and a distinctive code of the city.

WONG believes, “films create a space filled with stories. These stories, people and images are codes composing our lives and culture.”

“In applying both traditional and contemporary visuals to the selected 2046 film still, Mr. WONG brings out the theme of travelling from the past to future through this stylish piece,” said Mr. LI Cheuk To, the Artistic Director of the HKIFFS.

HKIFF40 will run from 21 March to 4 April 2016.  The key art is featured on all promotional platforms such as programme and booking folders, the official website, mobile app and etc.
